30 Days of Female Awesome | Day 10 | Favorite Female Character In A SciFi/Supernatural Show | Samantha “Sam” Carter, Stargate SG-1 & Stargate: Atlantis

“You blow up one sun, and suddenly everyone expects you to walk on water!”

There’s lots of fiercely awesomely epic ladies in the scifi shows I watch, but Sam is the one that doesn’t fit nicely into any other category so here she is.

Sam Carter is a woman in a man’s world, and you know what?  She owns it.  She never once allows the fact that she is in a huge minority to make her feel less worthy.  She’s not going to let that stop her from being who she is, professionally or personally.  She’s brave, loyal, remarkably unswayed by politics, actually has a three dimensional relationships with everyone.  She’s got a father, a female best friend, a male best friend, a science-geek best friend, a sort-of daughter in the I would have adopted you after your mother died except you were already a legal adult so I’m just going to sort of be your de facto mother kind of way.  She manages to be a scientist as well as a soldier, and, well, if she occasionally forgets to put up the sign warning you that there’s active force shields around?  Cut the girl some slack, she’s busy saving multiple species/realities/universes, etc.  This woman rewrites the laws of physics in her spare time, but she’s also a better pilot than you’ll ever be.  It’s lovely seeing her as a female soldier rather than a feminine soldier because I have issues with people who think female cops/soldiers have to be conventionally pretty in order to be successful.  And anyway, Sam with a zat gun saving you from the Goa’uld is probably a much prettier sight than some model thin cop wearing five inch heels.  One more thing: if you get in between Sam and her blue jello, not even Doc Fraiser is going to be able to patch you up again.

And you just KNOW that the blue jacket was one of his. Sam totally curls up in it after a long day when she needs a little comfort.
